A business's sign is the first contact a passerby has with the brand. A well-designed, well-built sign sets you apart from competitors for years with little maintenance. The wrong choices, on the other hand, can get expensive — both financially and visually.
Based on the mistakes we see most often in the field, here are 7 points to think through before you order a sign.
1. Read the facade and distance correctly
Legibility depends on the ratio between letter height and the viewer's distance from the sign. A storefront on a main avenue has different needs than one on a side street. During the site visit, facade width and the angle pedestrian and vehicle traffic approaches from should always be assessed.
2. Choose materials for the weather they'll face
Aluminum composite, plexiglass, chrome box letters, or non-illuminated plexi — each material has different durability and maintenance needs. In areas with high wind load or variable humidity, material choice directly affects the sign's lifespan.
3. Think about day and night visibility separately
A sign that looks sharp by day can go unnoticed once night falls without lighting. LED-illuminated box letters or neon-LED solutions are an important investment for businesses with evening foot traffic.
4. Keep it consistent with your brand identity
The color codes, font, and proportions from your logo should be reflected exactly on the sign. An inconsistent sign undermines brand trust.
5. Research local permits ahead of time
Most sign and totem installations are subject to the zoning and aesthetic rules of the district municipality where the business is located. Limits on size, projection distance, and lighting power can vary from district to district. We cover this in more detail in our signage & totem permits in Ankara post.
6. Don't overlook installation safety
Especially for facade-mounted and tall totem installations, mounting should be done with certified equipment and proper safety measures. Cheap labor on installation carries real risk, both for safety and for warranty coverage.
7. Work with one team, end to end
Splitting design, production, installation, and after-sale maintenance across different vendors leads to lost accountability and communication gaps. Running the whole process with a single team saves both time and budget.
